Introduction
How to Drink beer with the Chinese in China.
Instructions
Difficulty: Easy
Steps
1
Step One
Don’t be fooled, local Chinese can drink better than you can.
2
Step Two
Chinese are social drinkers. They will ask you how many bottles you can drink. Exaggerate and hope they are too. (and remember they are referring to large bottles, not the small ones)
3
Step Three
Expect to be offered cigarettes. If you don’t smoke, say that you “don’t know how to smoke”. DON’T say that you don’t smoke. (cultural thing..). This is said “wo bu hui” or pronounced “wor boo hoo-aye”
4
Step Four
There are two words you need to know. “GAN BEI” pronounced “gun bay” (means “dry cup” – or Cheers”.) This can sometimes mean “drink the whole damn glass”. So be careful. The second word is “Sui Yi” pronounced “Sway eee” (means drink casually). The later is good if you are drunk and don’t want to vomit.
5
Step Five
Some Chinese people will get a red face when they drink. Its not a sign of weakness.. you will vomit before they do.
6
Step Six
If you are offered rice wine (bai jiu), politely refuse. If they insist, then excuse yourself, go the toilet, and escape through the window. STICK TO BEER.
7
Step Seven
When you touch glasses, try to make your glass LOWER than theirs. This is a sign of respect.
